What is the Sustainable Construction Programme?

The sustainable construction programme is a student initiative at Oxford Brookes University which aims to raise awareness of sustainable construction as well as providing practical experience in sustainable building. Workshops involve hands-on tuition from sustainable construction experts for a small group of students and these are followed by an evening lecture to a wider audience.

Timber Frame and Breathable Walls Workshop

We made timber frame external breathable wall panels! By breathable they mean the moisture can travel out but not in. The group split up into teams. The girls made a wall and the boys made a wall with a window (decided by rock, paper, scissors!). We fixed them together making a corner of a timber building. The secret of the breathable walls was the bitroc (waste wood pulp and bitumin panel). Order from outside to inside: cladding (cedar), batons, bitroc, timber frame studs, insulation (sheeps wool or recycled news paper), OSD panel, batons, plasterboard panel. Was fantastic!
