What is the Sustainable Construction Programme?

The sustainable construction programme is a student initiative at Oxford Brookes University which aims to raise awareness of sustainable construction as well as providing practical experience in sustainable building. Workshops involve hands-on tuition from sustainable construction experts for a small group of students and these are followed by an evening lecture to a wider audience.

Cob workshop

Thank you to Annabel Fawcus!

This weeks workshop was about building earth walls with Cob. Cob is a traditional building method using earth, clay, and straw. The mixture is formed into blocks, and then built up in layers to form a wall.

This workshop gave us an insight into Peter Preston's mental state, as he revealed a love of stamping on baby seals. Phil Robinson also threw some dance moves, as he got into a Cob Jig!

A different type of maintainable development concentrates on building with organic components. There are quite a few restricted options in the regular components that are used for developing structures. Some opt to use organic components like dust, sand, and hay. Cob houses are an choice since these are made with local options like this.
